Making statements within the scope of World Sugar Consumption Awareness Week, Spec. Dr. Hilal Yıldırım Deryol drew attention to the negative impacts of hidden sugars taken in through packaged products and beverages on metabolic health.

Hidden Sugar Sources

Packaged snacks, sugary drinks, ready-made coffees, flavored milks and yogurts, breakfast products, and various sauces can increase daily sugar consumption. Even if a person does not add sugar to their tea or coffee, they can ingest high amounts of sugar from different products throughout the day.

Metabolic Disorders

Although excessive sugar consumption is not evaluated as the sole cause of a disease, it can lay the groundwork for metabolic disorders in the long run. Consuming sugar and energy above needs can facilitate weight gain and fat accumulation around the abdomen.

Insulin Resistance and Diabetes

The increase in abdominal fat is one of the significant risk factors for insulin resistance. Over time, insulin resistance can lead to impaired blood sugar control, prediabetes, and, if appropriate measures are not taken, progress to type 2 diabetes.

Sugars Taken Through Beverages

Carbonated drinks, coffees with added sugar, ready-made fruit juices, and flavored beverages can cause high amounts of sugar to be ingested in a short time. Frequent consumption of these products can increase total daily energy intake and make weight control difficult.

Sustainable Nutrition

The goal is not to ban all foods, but to be aware of total daily sugar consumption, examine the labels of packaged products, and establish a balanced nutrition routine.
