UK Issues Security Statement After US Withdraws Bombers from RAF Fairford Base
While the United States has withdrawn bomber aircraft from its military base due to security concerns, the London administration emphasized that the facility is secure.
The United States has withdrawn all bomber aircraft from the RAF Fairford military base back to its home country following security concerns and an ongoing terror investigation. Downing Street issued a statement indicating that the base is secure.
Withdrawal of Bombers from the Base
The Pentagon confirmed in a statement on Sunday that about a dozen B-1 type bombers were removed from the RAF Fairford base and returned to their home bases in America. US media reported that this decision was made following a major incident on September 27 when police intervened against three suspicious vehicles near the air base.
Statements from London and Washington Administrations
A Number 10 spokesperson stated that they would not comment on foreign military operations but emphasized that the base is secure. While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he was not drawing a direct link between last week's incident and the decision, Vice President JD Vance noted that the aircraft were moved out of an abundance of caution and that there were concerns regarding Iran.
Terror Investigation and Detentions
The incident that occurred at RAF Fairford, located in the Cotswolds region of Gloucestershire, is being investigated by counter-terrorism police. Within the scope of the investigation, five individuals initially detained on terrorism charges were released on bail, after which a sixth person holding both British and Iranian citizenship was also apprehended and released.
Allegations of Iranian Connection and Tehran's Response
According to a report by The New York Times, US commanders received new threats regarding an Iran-backed plot targeting RAF Fairford. While Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated there were strong indications of Iran's role behind the incident, the Tehran administration categorically denied the allegations.
