A comprehensive report published by the United Nations Environment Programme revealed that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees worldwide no longer has a realistic pathway and that surpassing this threshold has become inevitable.
Realities Revealed by the Report
In a 141-page report released on Wednesday, the United Nations Environment Programme announced that there is no realistic pathway to prevent warming from exceeding this threshold. According to the report, the strictest emissions reduction pathways available during the Paris Agreement era are no longer viable.
Deadlock in Emission Targets
UNEP has become the first UN agency to assess the 1.5-degree target as no longer attainable. To stay within the remaining carbon budget, global carbon dioxide emissions need to decline steadily starting from 2025 and reach zero by 2031.
Consequences of Current Policies
It is clearly stated that under current policies, the world is heading toward 2.6 degrees of warming by the end of the century. It was emphasized that climate commitments are not producing emissions reductions quickly enough and that exceeding 1.5 degrees is now inevitable.

Extreme heatwaves, wildfires, and sea-level rises indicate that the impacts of climate change will occur faster, more severely, and last longer. Additionally, attention was drawn to melting glaciers and increasing food security risks.

Published ahead of the COP31 climate summit to be held in Antalya in November, the report is overshadowed by disagreements over the phase-out of fossil fuels. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the overshoot must be kept as small as possible.
