Early Research-Oriented STEM Model from Da Nang University of Technology
Da Nang University of Technology has implemented a new STEM education model that involves students in scientific research and technology development processes from the beginning of their university years.
Da Nang University of Technology has established a comprehensive ecosystem that offers students early-stage research and technology development opportunities to enhance the quality of STEM education. The I-STAR research group and support programs within the university enable students to produce international publications, win overseas scholarships, and generate technological solutions to real-world problems.
Led by Assoc. Prof. Phan Hoang Nam, the Advanced and Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering Research Group (I-STAR) involves students in academic studies starting from their third year. Within this scope, Nguyen Dang Dai Nam won a doctoral scholarship from Roma Tre University in Italy, while four more students secured overseas scholarships in 2025. University Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Hieu stated that they have targeted international-standard scientific research activities starting from 2025, noting that budget support was provided to 19 projects under the 'Potential Student Scientific Research Projects' scope.
Among the projects, Huynh Dai's quantum model study on transformer fault diagnosis achieved an accuracy rate of 99.15% and was published in an Elsevier SCIE Q1 journal in April 2026. Additionally, an intelligent stethoscope project named 'RespirAI' won an award with an accuracy rate of 92.23%. Thanks to the cooperation with Yokohama National University, students take part in international projects in fields such as digital twins, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. The educational model advances along two main tracks: an academic path focused on scientific publications and a technology-focused application path; furthermore, through the 'Capstones Project' model in graduation internships, students gain experience targeting the real needs of businesses.
