Being Human in the Age of AI: Spirituality and Technology Discussions at the Church

All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Montecito, California, is organizing two public evening conversations to discuss the spiritual and social impacts of rapidly developing artificial intelligence technology on humanity.

Purpose and Content of the Event

With artificial intelligence becoming increasingly dominant in daily life, the church community is examining the meaning of this technology on human relationships, empathy, and social purpose.

Rather than treating artificial intelligence as a technical problem, the program aims to deeply examine the spiritual dimensions of being human and the effects of technology on this condition.

Facilitator and Approach

The discussions will be led by clergy member Rev. Channing Smith, offering participants guidance in light of theology and current academic studies.

The sessions will address elements such as the spiritual values and moral imagination that faith communities can bring to this transformation process.

Participation Conditions and Target Audience

No prior technical knowledge of artificial intelligence is required to attend the event, and the program is open to anyone with a broad perspective.

Whether participants approach the subject with curiosity, concern, or skepticism, the goal is to create a shared space for evaluation.

The meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings, September 23 and 30, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

The program will take place in the sanctuary of the church in Santa Barbara and will be completely open to the public.
