Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar attended the signing ceremony held at the TENMAK Istanbul Cekmece Campus. TENMAK and Copenhagen Atomics signed a memorandum of understanding to increase research and development capacity in the field of innovative nuclear technologies.
Development of Small Modular Reactors
Along with large-scale reactors, small modular reactors, described as the new era of nuclear energy, are being developed very rapidly around the world. While Turkey is carrying out significant activities in this field, investors are developing joint projects with public institutions.
Strategic Importance of Thorium Fuel
Thorium fuel stands out in Copenhagen Atomics technology. Thanks to the use of thorium, which is abundant in Turkey, it is anticipated that there will be no foreign dependency on fuel.
Domestic Industry and Engineering Contribution
With the agreement made, it is aimed to utilize Turkey's thorium resources in high value-added nuclear technologies. Domestic industry stakeholders, researchers, and engineering capacity will be included in the process.
Molten Salt Reactors Objective
One of the primary headings of the studies consists of R&D activities aimed at producing thorium in Turkey in a quality usable in Molten Salt Reactors, which are among the next-generation nuclear reactor technologies.
