A new bill prepared in Australia envisages giving social media users the option to opt out of personalized algorithmic feeds and see only content from accounts they follow.

Choice to Opt Out of Algorithms

According to a statement from the Australian Prime Minister's Office, the new bill aims to give social media users choices regarding their feeds.

Platforms will be required to send notifications to users on this matter, and those who do not want the algorithm will be able to see only the accounts they follow.

Protection of Youth and Design Measures

Within the scope of the bill, it is also envisaged that digital services will be protected from harmful design features that could negatively affect youth under 18 years of age.

Services will be obligated to protect youth from posts that encourage eating disorders, crime, and hostile ideas about gender equality.

Age Limit and Covered Platforms

The legal regulation regarding the access of those under 16 to social media platforms in Australia entered into force on December 10, 2025.

10 platforms, including X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Twitch, Threads, and Kick, are subject to this age restriction.

Heavy Penalties for Companies

With these laws, the government aims to reduce the negative effects of algorithms and harmful content on children and youth.

Heavy fines are envisaged if companies fail to take reasonable steps to remove accounts belonging to children under 16.
