UN Warning on Gaza: Winter Conditions in Tents Amplify Health Risks
The United Nations has announced that with the approach of winter, civilians living in tents in Gaza face a major health threat, and the existing health system cannot handle new waves of illness.
United Nations Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric announced at a daily press briefing that health risks are increasing exponentially for Palestinians struggling to survive in tents in Gaza as the winter season approaches.
Challenges Faced in Tent Cities
It was stated that Palestinians are forced to live under extremely crowded conditions in tent cities, which brings fundamental public health problems along with it.
Capacity Limit of the Health System
Conveying the findings of World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Dujarric warned that Gaza's health system, which is already at the limit of its capacity, cannot bear new increases in diseases and ailments.
Flood and Wastewater Danger
It is evaluated that as winter progresses and rainfall begins in Gaza, floodwaters could spread sewage and contaminated water to densely populated areas, increasing the risk of serious diseases.
Urgent Needs and Call for Aid
Ghebreyesus called for an urgent increase in access to limited laboratory and diagnostic materials, essential medicines, rehabilitation equipment, and public health services.
It was noted that the UN and humanitarian partners in Gaza continue to support Palestinians' preparations for the rainy season, but urgently more resources and access opportunities are needed for this support to be sufficient.
