Princeton University has announced the establishment of a new academic unit called Data and Intelligent Systems (DaIS) to support interdisciplinary research and education in artificial intelligence and data science.
Purpose and Scope of the New Academic Unit
The newly established unit aims to foster collaboration between science, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities by strengthening the strong ties between artificial intelligence and data science.
Provost Jennifer Rexford stated that this initiative will play a crucial role in advancing fundamental studies and interdisciplinary applications in the field of artificial intelligence.
Research Pillars and Leadership Structure
DaIS houses two core research pillars: Princeton AI and Princeton Statistics and Data Science, representing the evolution of the AI Lab and the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning units.
The new academic unit is co-directed by Tom Griffiths and Arthur Spirling.
New Initiatives in the Artificial Intelligence Pillar
The artificial intelligence pillar encompasses existing initiatives such as AI for Accelerating Invention, Natural and Artificial Minds, and Princeton Language and Intelligence, as well as projects launching in the fall.
AI Alignment and Safety, led by Elad Hazan, and Princeton Societal AI, led by Janet Vertesi and Matt Jones, are among the new initiatives launched this term.
Activities of the Statistics and Data Science Pillar
The statistics and data science pillar incorporates the Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering, the Data-Driven Social Science Initiative, and related educational programs.
This pillar will also continue the services formerly provided by the Survey Research Center, supporting innovative projects and the use of academic tools.
